Green Bay Packers Expected To Add Record Breaking Defender Amid Jaire Alexander Suspension

The Green Bay Packers made an extremely difficult decision on Wednesday.  The Packers announced the suspension of their star cornerback Jaire Alexander.  Alexander’s actions prior to their contest with the Carolina Panthers led to the decision.

While it is still very unlikely the Packers ever move on from Alexander, adding talent to that secondary will certainly be on their list of things to do this off-season.  One report suggests the Packers will add a record breaking safety to accomplish just that.

The Green Bay Packers Are Expected To Add Record Breaking Safety Out Of Miami

The NFL Staff at Bleacher Report highlighted why this move should happen:

2024 NFL Draft: S Kamren Kinchens, Miami

The Packers have several safeties whose contracts are about to expire, including starter Darnell Savage. Kinchens could be a good option to replace Savage, as the former Hurricane is currently the top free safety on B/R’s NFL draft big board.

“Kinchens is a versatile defender in the pass game,” B/R’s defensive backs scout Cory Giddings said in his scouting report for the Miami product. “He has countless snaps as both a deep defender from the one-high look and in man coverage from the slot. He does a good job of playing under control in his backpedal, displaying quick feet to get out of his pedal and drive on the ball.

“Kinchens has good route recognition and the ability to read and react to the quarterback’s eyes, especially when in underneath coverage. His ball skills shine through with his ability to locate the ball and the range to cover grass.

“Though he does a good job of anticipating the throw, he has poor eye discipline, allowing double-moves or eye candy to take him out of position in the pass game.”

Will The Packers Use Premium Draft Capital On The Secondary?

Kinchens’ physicality is evident when he takes on blocks. When he gets to the ball carrier, he uses his hands well to disengage from blockers and control them with good leverage.

Kinchens is regarded as one of the top safeties in this year’s draft. With his versatility and physicality, he can play in multiple coverage schemes and defend the run from multiple levels. The NFL will require Kinchens to improve his tackle security, but he has the skills to be an early starter or at least have a role in a team’s defense.

The Packers aren’t afraid of using premium draft picks on defenders.  It will be very interesting if Kinchens is on the board when it’s their time to make a selection.
