The Green Bay Packers are looking to field an elite defense in 2024.  Massive overhauls have taken place with both personnel and the coaching staff.  The defense and free agency addressed multiple areas of concern.

However, there could be another major addition on the way for Jeff Hafley’s unit.

According to Patrick McAavoy of The Sporting News:

The Green Bay Packers should be in the market to add another impact player or two in free agency before training camp rolls around.

Green Bay currently has the eighth-most cap space available of any National Football League team at just under $27 million. The Packers have had a strong offseason so far but one position that has been mentioned that could use a boost still is safety.

Luckily for the Packers, one of the top safeties in football is available in free agency. Former Denver Broncos superstar Justin Simmons is available and looking for his next opportunity and the Packers should consider a signing.

Since 2019, Simmons has made two Pro Bowl appearances and has been named an All-Pro four times, including the 2023 campaign.

He’s the type of player who immediately could fill one of the Packers’ biggest roster holes and they can afford him. With almost $27 million in cap space, they certainly could afford Simmons’ price tag.

Last season he had three interceptions, eight passes defended, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, one sack, and 70 total tackles.

The Packers have a real chance to contend in 2024 — especially if they can lock up quarterback Jordan Love to a long-term contract extension — and should be considering all options at this point with training camp quickly approaching.

It’s unclear if the Packers want to make another move, but they certainly should give Simmons a call as fast as possible.

The Packers adding a veteran at the Safety position feels like something that will only happen if they suffer an injury.  Xavier McKinney and the three Safeties they drafted look to continue this new era of young but talented playmakers in Green Bay.
