The Green Bay Packers have made numerous changes to their team on the offensive side of the ball over the last few seasons. Trades and free agent moves have ushered in a new identity on offense, specifically led by 25-year-old quarterback Jordan Love.
The players around him will (obviously) play a vital role in his ability to make the offense click. The Packers have made a pretty massive decision when it comes to Love’s protection.
The Green Bay Packers Make Significant Change On The Offensive Side
During offseason workouts, Jordan Morgan got reps at tackle, but during training camp he has primarily played guard. Many presumed that drafting Morgan in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft was to immediately replace David Bakhtiari. However, that might not be the case:
“He’s been predominantly inside,” LaFleur said. “I think he’s starting to feel more and more comfortable inside, but I think he’s talented enough that if we need to kick him outside, we can do that.”
Although a college left tackle, Morgan was seen by many as best suited to play inside at guard during the draft process.
The Packers have two returning starters at offensive tackle in Rasheed Walker and Zach Tom, although Tom hasn’t practiced in 11-on-11 work while recovering from an offseason pectoral injury. Inside at guard, Morgan is getting opportunities to play first-team reps, especially with Josh Myers (personal matter) and Elgton Jenkins (veteran rest day) missing a few practices early on.
It’s possible Morgan will get more chances to play tackle if the competition at right tackle — where Andre Dillard and Kadeem Telfort have rotated in and out with Tom not available — doesn’t improve.
The left tackle position if often regarded as the second most important position in football. Having someone capable of defending the quarterback’s blindside is very important.
If Green Bay feels comfortable with Morgan on the inside, they likely have a plan for left tackle. It will be interesting to see how the offensive line shakes out come week one of the 2024 season.
