Green Bay Packers See “Considerable Upside” in Jordan Love as Starting Quarterback

The Green Bay Packers are still awaiting a decision from Aaron Rodgers on whether or not he wants to play in 2023. While Packers fans and NFL analysts wonder aloud and on social media about whether and where Rodgers will play, it does not seem like the Packers organization is too concerned. Sure, there are some [big] salary cap implications tied to his decision. That being said, the organization feels pretty good about the starting quarterback in 2023, especially if that quarterback is Jordan Love.

The Green Bay Packers Have No More Concerns About Jordan Love

For the first two seasons that Jordan Love was sitting behind Aaron Rodgers, there were reportedly concerns within the organization that he was not developing as a quarterback in the way that they had hoped. However, his training camp, preseason, practices, and snaps during the 2022 regular season have laid those concerns to rest.

In an article posted by MMQB on Sports Illustrated, NFL insider Albert Breer, wrote:

“This year is different. They’re open to moving Rodgers. They have questions on backside-of-their-prime vets such as David Bakhtiari, with some cap issues to work through. And where they were worried about Love’s development a year ago, they’re now seeing a guy capable of starting—at the very least—with considerable upside.”

For months, Brian Gutekunst and Matt LaFleur have stated, when asked, that Jordan Love is ready to be a starting quarterback in the NFL. At the same time, they have also stated that they want Aaron Rodgers back in 2023.

Do the Green Bay Packers Have a Preference?

Why would the Packers give such conflicting answers to two different questions? Because, for them, this is a win-win situation. They either go into 2023 with a future Hall of Famer and four-time MVP under center, or they hand the keys to a young quarterback in whom they have a lot of confidence.

Yes, there are salary cap issues that need to be figured out one way or another. Sure, the future beyond 2023 is littered with hard-hitting concerns that the team will need to figure out eventually.

But for 2023? Hey, let’s get excited! Rodgers? Love? Both have higher MVP odds than Kirk Cousins and Jared Goff. Green Bay could be in a worse spot, and this spot, when you think about it, is not really that bad. Most teams would do unspeakable things to be able to pick between two quarterbacks in whom they have confidence to lead their offenses.
