The Green Bay Packers are 11-5 on the season coming off of their 27-25 loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday afternoon. The good news for Green Bay, though, is that they have already clinched a postseason spot. They currently are in possession of the seventh seed, but can improve to the sixth seed if the Washington Commanders lose to the 8-9 Dallas Cowboys and if they themselves beat the Chicago Bears in Week 18.
Should the Packers lose or both they and the Commanders win, Green Bay will stay in the seventh seed and travel to the play the Philadelphia Eagles in the Wild Card Round of the NFL Playoffs. Of course, the Packers lost to the Eagles in Week One by the score of 34-29 in Brazil, a game that saw quarterback Jordan Love injured with a sprained MCL that cost him two games.
The Green Bay Packers Will Likely Need to Beat the Philadelphia Eagles, Minnesota Vikings, and Detroit Lions to Get to the Super Bowl
If the Packers do end up getting the sixth seed, they would travel out west to play the Los Angeles Rams. It seems more likely, though, that they will remain in the seventh seed.
As mentioned, this would mean that they will play the Eagles, who are currently 13-3 on the season. It also means that, as the NFC’s lowest seed, they will play the highest-seeded team in each round should they continue to advance.
The number one seed in the NFC will be determined next Sunday night when the Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings, both 14-2, face off in the final game of the 2024 NFL regular season. The winner will get a first-round bye and home field advantage throughout the playoffs. The loser will be the fifth seed, and have a Wild Card matchup with the NFC South winner (likely the Tampa Bay Buccaneers).
Based on this likely playoff scenario, it is probable that, should the Packers advance to the Super Bowl, they will have had to beat the Eagles, Lions, and Vikings, all on the road.
The problem is that each of Green Bay’s five losses this year have come to those exact teams.
One NFL Executive Is Not Doubting the Green Bay Packers and Jordan Love
Packers fans on social media have termed this probable of Packers playoff foes as “the Gauntlet,” and for good reason. Through 16 weeks, the three teams are a combined 41-7.
But one NFL executive, speaking to Mike Sando of The Athletic, said that, while he views the Packers as the fourth-best team in the NFC, they have the potential to beat anyone in the NFL:
“I trust Green Bay’s quarterback and coach on the road with nothing to lose more than I trust Minnesota with all the pressure. Green Bay is dangerous. I think Green Bay is capable of beating anybody in the NFC.”
As one can see, this executive cites Green Bay’s quarterback (Love) and head coach (Matt LaFleur) as reasons why the Packers are to be feared, especially when they do not have anything to lose.
Last year, no one expected Green Bay to be good after trading Aaron Rodgers. But they made the postseason in Love’s first season as a starter and, with nothing to lose, upset the Cowboys in round one.
Similarly, no one expects the Packers to compete with the powerhouses of the NFC, the Eagles, Lions, and Vikings. They do not have anything to lose again.
