The Green Bay Packers turned in an excellent preseason debut performance which resulted in a 36-19 blowout win over a Joe Burrow-less Cincinnati Bengals on Friday. This win obviously doesn’t mean that the Packers will emerge as Super Bowl champions in 2023, but at the same time, there’s no denying that there was a lot to smile about in Green Bay’s first game of the preseason.
Green Bay Packers Coach Matt LaFleur Reacts to Jordan Love’s Debut vs. Bengals
One of the highlights of the victory was Jordan Love’s eye-opening debut. The Packers’ new QB1 finished the game with 7-of-10 passing for 46 yards and a touchdown. It wasn’t exactly an Aaron Rodgers performance from Love, but it was an undeniably promising outing from the 24-year-old.
Packers head coach Matt LaFleur had nothing but high praise from his young QB as they both enter a crucial season in 2023:
“All in all, I thought it was a good first performance,” LaFleur said, via Matt Schneidman of The Athletic. “It was very limited action. I’m sure he would love to have the throw to Musgrave back, but there’s a lot to learn from. A lot of good came out of it. Just the poise he showed, the command he showed. I thought we were getting in and out of the huddle quickly, so I thought it was a really good first exposure for him for this season.”
The errand pass LaFleur was talking about was Love’s turnover early in the game. The quarterback overthrew Luke Musgrave despite the fact that there was no defender close to the tight end. However, a testament to Love’s resilience was his ability to bounce back from that early mistake, as he helped Green Bay overcome the Bengals in their preseason opener.
With Aaron Rodgers now out of the picture, Jordan Love will finally get a chance to show the Packers what he can do. There are a lot of expectations for this young man, and his progress in the offseason has been very promising. He’s gotten his first preseason game out of the way, and while he didn’t exactly blow everyone away in his first outing, there’s no denying that Packers fans have a lot to be excited about this coming season.
