The Green Bay Packers fans left the Aaron Rodgers era uncertain for the future, as 2020 first-round pick Jordan Love had yet to see any substantial playing time in his first two years on the Packers bench. Luckily for fans (and GM Brian Gutekunst) the Packers seemingly got the perfect guy, as in Love’s first season starting for the green and gold he threw for over four thousand yards and 32 touchdowns. Love not only found statistical success, but he also led the team just four points from an NFC Championship appearance (as the youngest team ever to win a playoff game).
With just one season remaining on his renegotiated 2-year deal, Jordan Love is looking to get paid before risking injury. Judging by the latter half of his debut season, Jordan Love should be demanding a hefty QB contract likely in the top 10 of current QB contracts. But considering his generally unproven resume and high ceiling and high floor, it makes the price conversation a unique one to think about.
The Price of Green Bay Packers Quarterback Jordan Love

With the offseason in the middle stages, the Green Bay Packers look to finalize contracts not only for now but for the future as well. The biggest of those potential contracts is for the most important position in the NFL, as quarterback Jordan Love pursues a franchise contract. Luckily for all parties, it appears that a contract is in the works.
#Packers GM Brian Gutekunst gave @czabe and @Brian_Butch the latest on the Jordan Love contract situation this morning👇
“We’re in those conversations right now. Both parties want the same thing. We’d like to get this done before training camp for sure.” pic.twitter.com/fqZriW2zzG

Coming from the General Manager himself, the Green Bay Packers are deep in discussion for a signing of their franchise QB. For Gutekunst, he has an incentive to secure this deal to secure his job, given that Jordan Love was a controversial draft pick at the time. But the only drawback of having a QB as good or better than Jordan Love in his current form is giving them the check.
The market for all positions is in a unique space with the increase in cap space. In this offseason alone we have seen a handful of the highest-paid contracts in the NFL including division rivals Justin Jefferson and Jared Goff. It is extremely unlikely Jordan Love eclipses their numbers, though Goff’s contract will certainly be referenced by Jordan Love’s agent.
The New York Times crunched numbers on what type of money Jordan Love may be signing too.
50.5 million a year sounds like an overpay if we are going off past years’ contract numbers, though if a deal like that was struck it would fall just outside the current top 5 and just ahead of names like Kyler Murray and Deshaun Watson. With other names like Dolphins Tua Tagovailoa and Cowboys Dak Prescott inking deals in coming years, that contract could easily look like a bargain in the near future.
The Green Bay Packers and Jordan Love are in a unique spot in NFL terms, as most QBs have a large sample size by the time they look to sign their big bank contract, and Love only has one season starting. That could affect the negotiation in either direction, either Love could take a bit less than expected due to a lack of sample size or the Packers may overpay in hindsight for a QB who overperformed before his big check. Regardless of what the contract may look like now or in hindsight, the fans, the organization, and Jordan Love are all ready to get a deal done.
