In the 2023 NFL offseason, the Green Bay Packers traded away four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets. The trade was made to allow Jordan Love to take over the offense, the quarterback they traded up to take in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft. In the same way that many criticized the Packers when they moved on from Brett Favre, many criticized the Packers when they moved on from Rodgers.
Similarly, it was evident that Rodgers was the right choice for the team when he took over in 2008. While he got off to a slow start due to the lack of regular season playing time both he and his pass catchers had before the year, Love lit the NFL on fire in the second half of the season.
At the end of the season, Love had a 64.2% completion percentage, 4,159 passing yards, 32 touchdown passes, 11 interceptions, and a 96.1 passer rating. Neither Rodgers nor Favre put up as good of numbers in their first seasons as the Packers starting quarterback.
Now Love will be in Green Bay for the foreseeable future.
The Green Bay Packers Extend Jordan Love On Massive 4-Year Contract
With Rodgers traded to the Jets, the Packers and Love signed a two-year contract that included a raise for last season and bought out his fifth-year option for 2024. The idea was that if Love proved himself, he would sign a much more lucrative contract later.
He proved himself.
Due to the contract he signed last year, Love could not sign another extension until May. Several rumors have circulated since then regarding Love’s potential earnings.
Love and the Packers have agreed to a four-year contract worth $220 million, according to Ian Rapoport.
Sources: #Packers QB Jordan Love has agreed to a 4-year extension worth $220M, which makes him the highest paid QB in NFL history despite only starting 1 full season.
