It has been a busy off-season for the Green Bay Packers. So far, most of the headlines have been about Joe Barry’s firing. However, the new coaching staff surrounding the defense has also been noteworthy.
There will still be fans who follow previous coaches and players as they start new jobs in 2024, despite the excitement of seeing what the 2024 Packers will look like. Next season will be no different as one former coach will return to Lambeau Field in 2024.
The Green Bay Packers Will Face Former Coach In 2024
As Robin Adams of Wisconsin Sports Heroics initially reported:
The Green Bay Packers‘ decision to move on from Joe Barry has been just about as popular among fans as the initial decision to hire him was unpopular. After three long years that saw the Packers’ defense underperform despite having eight first round picks, head coach Matt LaFleur finally made the decision that a change was necessary.
In Barry’s place, the Packers hired Boston College head coach Jeff Hafley. His hiring has also meant that several Packers defensive coaches, including defensive line coach Jerry Montgomery, were let go. Montgomery, who had been the longest-tenured coach in Green Bay having first been hired in 2015, recently took a job with the New England Patriots.
Early Tuesday morning, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reported that Joe Barry has found a new position on a new team. He is being hired by the Miami Dolphins to be their linebackers coach/run game coordinator.
Of course, coaching with the Dolphins that Barry will face former Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers twice a year. Both the Dolphins and New York Jets are in the AFC East.
Joe Barry Will Return To Lambeau Field Next Season
As the Packers announced, the Miami Dolphins will come to Lambeau Field in 2024.
As long as Aaron Jones stays in town, it will be interesting to see what the Packers’ rushing attack looks like against a Joe Barry led rush defense. He will be in charge of their linebackers and run game defense.
The Dolphins’ hiring of Barry as their run game coordinator will raised some eyebrows after the Packers surrendered the 28th-most rushing yards to their opponents.
Barry’s defense, however, played well in the Packers’ Super Wild Card Weekend upset of the Dallas Cowboys, which was a final highlight of his tenure with the Packers.
The post-season run wasn’t enough to retain Barry’s job in Green Bay, but it was enough to prompt him to move to Miami, where he will work under Anthony Weaver, the Dolphins’ new defensive coordinator.
