New Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley is making a return to the NFL after spending nearly half a decade in the college ranks as head coach of the Boston College Eagles. Hafley’s decision to give the pros another shot came amid his apparent alienation from the college football environment that suddenly did not feel the way it used to be for him. An unnamed ESPN source told the media outlet that Hafley simply wants to put more focus on coaching football and less on the intricacies of the recruitment landscape in college, especially with the arrival of NIL.
“He wants to go coach football again in a league that is all about football,” a source told ESPN. “College coaching has become fundraising, NIL and recruiting your own team and transfers. There’s no time to coach football anymore.
“A lot of things that he went back to college for have disappeared.”
Jeff Hafley’s Focus is Now on the Green Bay Packers
Hafley ultimately got what he desired, as he is now the mastermind of the Green Bay Packers defense that recently parted ways with Joe Barry. As the new defensive coordinator of the Packers, Hafley will be under pressure to deliver right away, as Green Bay looks to sustain the momentum it established in 2023 when they exceeded expectations, in large part because of Jordan Love and the offense.
Before he left Boston College, Hafley was able to steer the program to a bowl-eligible campaign in 2023 in which the Eagles went 7-6 and won the Fenway Bowl. In 48 games coached at Boston College, Hafley went 22-26.
