The Green Bay Packers drafted cornerback Jaire Alexander 18th overall (first-round selection) in the 2018 NFL Draft from the Louisville Cardinals. Alexander has been effective during his NFL career with the Packers, but the last couple of seasons took a turn for the worse.
Jaire Alexander has not been healthy for the last couple of seasons. He missed 10 games during the 2023 season and Alexander last played in 2024 against the Chicago Bears on 11/17. He was placed on injured reserve before the end of the 2024 season. After the season ended for the Green Bay Packers, Alexander refused to speak to the media and is unsure if he will be back with the team next season.
Green Bay Packers Could Save Money This Offseason By Releasing Cornerback Jaire Alexander
One of the biggest talks about the Packers this offseason will be whether or not Alexander will be back with the team for next season. There is a good chance that Green Bay will decide to release or trade Jaire Alexander this offseason.
However, the Bleacher Report Scouting Department listed three players on the Packers roster who could potentially be cap casualties this NFL offseason. The top player on the list for Green Bay is cornerback Jaire Alexander. The Bleacher Report Scouting Department said:
“The Packers have done a nice job of balancing their books, so there isn’t a lot of need to make massive cuts for cap purposes. The only player with a major contract who is going to need to be addressed is Jaire Alexander. He is being paid like one of the top corners in the league, but his health has become an issue. He’s only played in 14 games over the past two seasons.
There are going to be other solutions than outright cutting him. He could be a restructure or trade candidate, but a pre-June 1 cut would save the organization $7.3 million in 2025 cap space. A post-June 1 cut would create $17.5 million.
Neither is probably the best option. Alexander could have a trade market, and it would be worth checking in on whether he’d be willing to take a pay cut.”
Some teams could trade for a cornerback this offseason. Also, if the Packers did release Alexander this offseason, it would be a cap casualty of $25.4 million. Jaire Alexander this past season recorded 16 tackles, one fumble recovery, two interceptions, one defensive touchdown, and seven pass deflections.
Cornerback Overhaul This Offseason
There is no doubt that the Packers will be making changes to the cornerback position this offseason. There is a chance that Alexander, Keisean Nixon, and Eric Stokes will all not be on the roster next season. Cornerback could be one of the biggest needs for this football team this offseason.
Alexander is 27 years old. If healthy, there still may be something left in the tank for him. However, there is also a chance that Alexander will not be traded or released this offseason and might take a pay cut instead. With his injuries over the last two seasons, this may not be the ideal option for the Packers fanbase however because he has been injury-prone lately.
