The Green Bay Packers selected Jacob Monk from Duke with the 163rd overall pick (fifth-round selection) in the 2024 NFL Draft. Monk has been a backup guard/center all of training camp for Green Bay.
On Thursday, things changed in camp for him. Jordan Morgan suffered a shoulder injury earlier in the week and was playing at right guard before the injury. Morgan was a first-round pick (25th overall selection) from Arizona in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Replacing Jordan Morgan was Sean Rhyan until Rhyan committed a false start penalty and then came in Monk. He worked with most of the first team for the Green Bay Packers at right guard on Thursday.
Green Bay Packers Jacob Monk Talks To the Media After Practice About Playing Right Guard
With Morgan being out for the Packers, Jacob Monk will likely start at right guard against the Cleveland Browns in a preseason game on Saturday. Monk told Rob Reischel of forbes.com about the practice on Thursday by saying:
“It’s crazy lining up and seeing someone like Kenny Clark right in front of me and seeing the speed that he plays with and the intent that he has coming off the ball. It’s definitely different to see out there.”
His father, Stanley, also attended Duke from 1984-1987 and was an undrafted free agent who signed with the Dallas Cowboys. Jacob Monk’s late uncle, Quincy, played linebacker for the New York Giants in the early-2000s. Monk also added about playing for the Packers in the preseason on Saturday against the Browns:
“I’m really excited. It’s a dream come true. My parents say my first word was football. Probably not but that’s what I’ve heard. I’ve loved football since the beginning. It really has been a dream of mine.”
Monk is 23 years old and is 6’3″ and weighs 308 lbs. Hopefully, he will make a name for himself during his first preseason game in the NFL. If the rookie offensive lineman performs well in all three games in the preseason for Green Bay, there is no doubt he can make the roster.
That would also put Sean Rhyan’s roster spot in potential jeopardy. Trying to replace Jon Runyan Jr. on the roster has not been easy for Green Bay this offseason after he left for the New York Giants in free agency.
