The Green Bay Packers season kicked off in Sao Paolo Brazil versus the Philadelphia Eagles. The highly anticipated matchup went in the Eagles’ direction in the end, despite a three-turnover performance by the Packers’ defense.
The roster appeared primed to go back to Lambeau ready to get their first win of the season. Unfortunately, those plans were altered by an unfortunate MCL sprain that occurred to starting quarterback Jordan Love before the final play of the game. Heading into their matchup against the Indianapolis Colts, there will be a few players Packers fans should be keeping an eye on.
Green Bay Packers Backup QB Malik Willis Sprung Into Action
Before the Green Bay Packers week 1 roster was released, they made a drastic change to the QB room. Moving on from second-year Sean Clifford and failing to keep rookie Micheal Pratt on the practice squad, the Packers traded for the Tennessee Titans Malik Willis.
Willis will get his first start as a Green Bay Packer sooner than anyone could have expected, likely getting the nod in Week 2 versus the Colts. The 2022 third-round pick failed to earn the spot in Tennessee between the eras of Ryan Tannehill and Will Levis. In his 12 NFL appearances, Willis has totaled 494 yards all-purpose, one rushing touchdown, and three interceptions.
The Colts’ defense is not one full of stars and finished mediocre among team defenses leaguewide in 2023. Malik Willis could change the trajectory of his career with a standout performance on short notice.
Emmanuel Wilson Prepares For Bigger Workload
The second running back workload (behind newly acquired Josh Jacobs) is Emmanuel Wilson’s to take with the release of AJ Dillon and the injury status of Marshawn Lloyd.
Emanuel Wilson was an undrafted free agent that quickly caught on with the Green Bay Packers. The running back was a standout in his Division Two college and translated success quickly in the NFL. Against the Philadelphia Eagles, Wilson broke out for an 18-yard run, finding 46 yards with only four carries.
If Matt Lafleur’s offense leans on the running backs in Jordan Love’s absence, Wilson may be looking at more snaps against the Colts.
Xavier McKinney Tries To Create Turnover Streak With Green Bay Packers
In Xavier McKinney’s first game as a Green Bay Packer, he made his presence felt early with an impressive interception. To start hot in new colors is something McKinney looks to build off of at home.
Anthony Richardson threw an interception in the Colts 29-27 loss to the Houston Texans. The interception went to rookie safety Calen Bullock. If Richardson can make a mistake against an unproven rookie, McKinney is likely looking to start an interception streak against the inexperienced QB.
