The Green Bay Packers using a first-round pick on a wide receiver in the form of Matthew Golden during the 2025 NFL draft had people turning their heads.
After all, the last time they selected a player of the same position in the first round of a draft was way back in 2002.
Given that historical context, there is pressure on the shoulders of Golden to perform well. The same can be said about Green Bay’s front office, especially since the Packers went through the entire Aaron Rodgers era without giving him an organic first-round pick wideout as a weapon downfield.
With Golden, the Packers believe they have someone who can elevate the team’s passing attack that’s led by quarterback Jordan Love.
Green Bay Packers rookie draws bright outlook from GM

The Packers have already started their training camp this week, and it did not take long for Golden to have his, well, golden moment in practice. According to Ryan Wood of USA Today, the former Texas Longhorns star wide receiver found the end zone while being defended by Green Bay defensive back Carrington Valentine.
Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst spoke about Golden on Wednesday.
Via Wood:
Brian Gutekunst says Matthew Golden “has a chance to make an impact” as a rookie. How he’ll handle that pressure: “He played in a fishbowl at Texas and went to the playoffs, so hopefully he’s seen some things that will help him.”
In the 2024 college football season, Golden had 987 receiving yards and nine touchdowns on 58 receptions for the Longhorns, who made it to the College Football Playoff.
