The Green Bay Packers are headed into a pivotal season in 2023. It is the first season in 31 years that Brett Favre or Aaron Rodgers isn’t the starting quarterback for the Packers come Week One of the NFL season. That responsibility has been has been handed to fourth-year quarterback Jordan Love.
One aspect that will help Love be successful in his first year starting at quarterback will be a competent defense. Going into 2022 many believed the Packers had a top-five unit, talent-wise. While that talent may have been there, the execution was not.
The Packers’ defense allowed nearly 22 points per game (18th overall) in 2022, and that number would have been much higher had the Packers not allowed just 17 points per game over the last 5 contests of the season. Going into 2023, the defense hopes to continue the success they had at the end of the year, and there is one free agent who could help with that.
Green Bay Packers Urged To Pursue Free Agent Cornerback Greedy Williams
According to Sayre Bedinger of Lombardi Ave:
Speaking of former second-round picks in the 2019 NFL Draft, how about the Packers take a shot on a player like former LSU star Greedy Williams?
Things have certainly not worked out for Williams as many had hoped when he was a second-round pick by the Cleveland Browns back in 2019, but I also think the Green Bay Packers are in a position right now where they can afford to take some risks on guys at the cornerback position. The cornerback group is not “weak” by any means, but Green Bay only kept four cornerbacks on the 53-man roster with Eric Stokes starting the year on the PUP.
Now would be a great time for the Packers to get a look at someone like Williams in practices and see if he can provide value. After the team took a shot on Rasul Douglas and hit (in a big way) a few years ago, how can you not like the possibility of another reclamation project?
Williams was a highly gifted player at LSU, who was Cleveland’s second-round pick in 2019. A redshirt freshman in 2017, he led the Southeastern Conference with six interceptions, he had eight interceptions in his sophomore year, and he was a first-team All-American and a finalist for the Thorpe Award (awarded to the nation’s top defensive back) that same year.
It has not been smooth sailing for Williams since the Browns selected him 46th in the 2019 NFL Draft. After starting 12 games as a rookie and showing promise, Williams suffered an injury to his shoulder during training camp in 2020 and missed the entire season.
In 2021, Williams played 16 games with eight starts. He tied the team-high with 10 passes defended and added two interceptions. Last season, Williams played just 105 defensive snaps for the Browns.
