Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has dominated headlines all offseason. Despite the Packers not playing in the postseason, Rodgers and his future have been the talk of NFL pundits and fans for months. News that he spoke with the New York Jets on Monday night only furthered the speculation. With free agency and the draft coming up soon, the Packers need a decision so they know what direction in which to go moving forward. Gilbert Brown, a Green Bay Packers Hall of Famer, had some strong words regarding the situation on Monday’s Earl Ingram Show.
Gilbert Brown Compares Aaron Rodgers to Brett Favre
Radio host Earl Ingram has a segment of his show on Monday’s called “Under the Helmet with the Gravedigger.” He began this week’s show with, “So, Aaron Rodgers…”
Gilbert Brown was quick to interject, “Man, why you got to open the show with this dude?”
Ingram explained that people want to know what Rodgers is going to do, especially after his four-day darkness retreat that was supposed to provide him with clarity. He asked Brown what his thoughts on the situation were:
“Now, knowing that the Green Bay Packers are America’s team, not Dallas, no not Dallas. The Green Bay Packers are America’s team. Everyone wants to know the state of what’s going on. Now, going back to our quarterback histories, we have had three of the best quarterbacks and we’ve been lucky enough to have them in different phases of our lives. Bart Starr, Brett Favre, Aaron Rodgers.
“Now, going back to the Brett Favre era, when did Brett Favre tell y’all anything?”
Ingram said, “I don’t know, man! It wasn’t they way it is with Aaron Rodgers.”
“Thank you. Brett Favre was always like, ‘If I’m going to retire or not, I’ll let you know. Where do you think Aaron Rodgers is getting this from? It’s a trickle down. You never got a solid answer from Brett Favre, you’ll never get a solid answer from Aaron Rodgers. That’s just the way it is. Quarterbacks are a different breed, I keep trying to tell you that.”
Gilbert Brown: Aaron Rodgers Is Being a Distraction
Aaron Rodgers (12) raises the ball in victory after taking a knee at the end of the Green Bay Packers’ win over the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field.
Syndication The Post CrescentIngram stated that the people just want to know what Rodgers will do. Gilbert responded:
“Who has to know? Let me tell you something. I understand where everyone is coming from. In this world of ours, everyone has to know right now! But you got to understand something, man: there is no rush. You got a quarterback waiting in the wings. Jordan Love. Now what you need to do is worry about building your team.
Let’s say Aaron Rodgers leaves. You got Jordan Love. Let’s say he stays. Now you got Aaron Rodgers and Jordan Love. Let’s focus on building that team up so that when the time comes Jordan Love has the ammunition to fight with.
“See, all this stuff we’re doing right now is a distraction. I don’t care, Aaron Rodgers is going to make people mad and he’s going to drag you all through the tulips or whatever. But let him go play his game by himself. Let him be a distraction by himself.”
Gilbert certainly has a point. The Packers need to be doing what is best for the team as a whole, not just what is best for Aaron Rodgers. Regardless of who is under center in 2023, they need to improve the wide receiver and tight end positions, giving that quarterback the best chance to be successful. Additionally, the defensive side of the ball has plenty of holes that need to be addressed. Perhaps we should be more concerned about the team than we are about one particular player, as talented as that player is.
