The Green Bay Packers are a team that takes a great deal of pride in its history. And well they should. There is perhaps no team in the NFL with a storied a history as that in Green Bay. As the 2023 Packers attempt to add to the amazing history, one player with a special connection to their past is trying to make the team. Jack Plumb, an undrafted rookie offensive tackle out of Iowa, is trying to make the team that his grandfather, Fritz Shurmur, helped lead to Super Bowl glory.
Green Bay Packers Hopeful Jack Plumb Is Fritz Shurmur’s Grandson

The connection between Plumb and Shurmur was pointed out by Packers writer Wes Hodkiewicz in his “Five Things Learned” article regarding Packers rookie mini camp. According to Hodkiewicz, head coach Matt LaFleur had this to say about Plumb:
“Jack did a nice job out there. It’s fun when you get into some of these settings. … I just kind of sat back and try to watch just how guys broke the huddle, their urgency, getting lined up, the way they communicate with one another and then the effort that they gave, so I’ll go back and kind of look at more of the technique stuff and assignment-based things that we always look for as soon as we’re done here.”
Plumb is local to the Green Bay area. He is a graduate of Bay Port High School. As seen pictured above, he played his college ball at Iowa along with Packers first round draft pick Lukas Van Ness.

This is an episode from last season when Packers Hall of Famer Gilbert Brown recorded a show with Wisconsin Sports Heroics every week. In this episode, he talked a great deal about Fritz Shurmur and what playing for him was like.
