Former Green Bay Packers kicker Greg Joseph is staying put in the NFC North division. After getting released by the Packers before the start of the 2024 NFL regular season, Joseph has signed with the Detroit Lions to be with their practice squad, according to his agent, Brett Tessler of Tessler Sports Management.
“The Detroit Lions just signed my kicker Greg Joseph to their practice squad. 7-year vet was last with Green Bay and spent three prior seasons with the Minnesota Vikings.”

The Lions are set with in the kicker position with Jake Bates locking down the position. However, Joseph brings insurance for Detroit’s kicker slot and also mentorship for Bates, who went undrafted in the 2023 NFL draft. Bates was inked by the Houston Texans in 2023 but was later released. He then took his talents to the Michigan Panthers of the UFL before finding his way back to the NFL with the Lions.
Bates impressed in the Lions’ 26-20 Week 1 win over the Los Angeles Rams, as he drained a game-tying field goal from 32 yards away to force overtime, where Detroit got the job done.
Joseph was brought in by the Packers last March as competition for Anders Carlson, but both kickers were released by Green Bay, which then went with undrafted rookie Brayden Narveson. The 30-year-old Joseph entered the NFL in 2018, playing his first season in the pros with the Cleveland Browns. He also suited up for the Tennessee Titans and the Minnesota Vikings.
