The Green Bay Packers are in a better spot at this time heading into training camp than they were last season. They will still have to figure out some things with the roster before the season starts. However, Green Bay did not address all of its issues with the roster during the offseason.
There is one spot on the roster that could cause a major problem later on this season and it has been mentioned quite frequently this offseason. The good news is that there is still time to fix the problem before the start of the 2024 season or it could be fixed within the 2024 season.
Green Bay will have high expectations once again this season. They feel like they are on the cusp of competing and potentially winning a Super Bowl Title.
Green Bay Packers Concern Heading Into Training Camp Is Eric Stokes As the Second Cornerback On the Roster
Different staff members of The Athletic posted a concern for each NFL team entering training camp this year. Green Bay Packers beat writer for The Athletic Matt Schneidman said about the team heading into training camp:
“How will the second outside cornerback spot shake out?
Eric Stokes is starting there now opposite Jaire Alexander, but the 2021 first-round pick, despite everyone singing his praises in May and June, has barely played over the last season and a half. Carrington Valentine held his own as a seventh-round rookie in 2023, but do the Packers see him as consistent starter material or just a worthy fill-in like last season? The Packers didn’t draft a cornerback, so it’ll be on one of those two to show the flashes they’ve shown in the past can happen regularly.”
Eric Stokes and Carrington Valentine will compete for the other starting cornerback spot on the Green Bay Packers roster entering training camp. If Stokes were to lose the job to Valentine, it would be interesting to see whether or not he would even make the 53-man roster.
He probably would make the roster anyway. One of the biggest head-scratchers this offseason was general manager Brian Gutekunst selecting offensive tackle Jordan Morgan with the 25th pick in the 2024 NFL Draft from Arizona other than a defensive back.
There were plenty of quality available cornerbacks on the draft board then and they are probably regretting that decision now. The only cornerback the Green Bay Packers selected in the 2024 NFL Draft was Kalen King from the Penn State Nittany Lions as a seventh-round selection. King may not even make the roster this season.
The Green Bay Packers have to hope that Eric Stokes plays well in training camp and doesn’t get hurt. If Stokes is outplayed by Valentine, then he can be officially labeled as a bust.
