Green Bay Packers: Disgruntled 2x Pro Bowler Reports to Camp Amid Jaire Alexander Release News

Ever since the Green Bay Packers offseason began following their loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the Wild Card Round of the NFL Playoffs, the future of two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Jaire Alexander has been one of the biggest questions facing the organization.

A day after that loss, Alexander told reporters that he had “nothing good to say” and that he did not know if he would be returning to the team in 2025. These comments fueled months of speculation regarding what Green Bay planned to do at the cornerback position. While they did sign Nate Hobbs in free agency, they did not re-sign Eric Stokes, Robert Rochelle, or Corey Ballentine. They did select Micah Robinson in the seventh round of the NFL Draft, but otherwise did not do much to restore the depth that they lost.

Many felt that this was a sign that Alexander would be back despite what he had previously said. However, news broke Monday morning that he had been informed of his release from the Packers.

The Green Bay Packers Have Released Jaire Alexander, but Elgton Jenkins Has Reported

But while on two-time Pro Bowler is on his way out the door, another is finally reporting to the team for the first time this offseason. Elgton Jenkins, who is moving from left guard to center, reported to Green Bay for mandatory mini camp. However, he is not expected to participate in practice:

Jenkins did not attend voluntary workouts because he wants a revised contract from the team after moving from left guard to center. The move was preceded by Green Bay allowing center Josh Myers to leave in free agency and adding former San Francisco 49ers left guard Aaron Banks.

While Jenkins has made two Pro Bowls as a left guard, he can play (and has played) every position on the offensive line. He was a center in college and filled in at the position when Myers went down with an injury in 2021.

The reason for Jenkins’ displeasure with his contract is because centers do not make as much money as guards in the NFL. He also knows that it is not likely that the Packers will give him a third contract, as they very rarely give those out to long-time veterans. Due to these reasons, he likely would prefer to have the rest of his current contract fully guaranteed, or have a year or two added on to it.

The fact that he is reporting to mandatory camp, though, is a good sign that negotiations are heading in the right direction.
