The Green Bay Packers are 10-4 and in prime position to make the NFL Playoffs for the second year in a row and the fourth time in head coach Matt LaFleur‘s five seasons. A win on Monday Night Football over the New Orleans Saints will clinch a postseason berth for Green Bay in what has been a highly successful season up to this point.
Part of the reason for Green Bay’s improved regular season has been the play of their defense under new defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley. Currently, the Packers have the eighth-best scoring defense in the NFL (20.5 points allowed per game) and are 10th in yards allowed per game (321.8).
It has not always been easy getting the defense to play well. Injuries to star players like Jaire Alexander and Quay Walker have hurt the team’s depth. But Green Bay has, fortunately, used a great deal of draft capital on the defensive side of the ball, and a few young players are starting to emerge as future big-time stars at their respective positions
One of these is linebacker Edgerrin Cooper.
Green Bay Packers Linebacker Edgerrin Cooper Is Having a Great Rookie Season
The Packers selected Cooper in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft with the 45th overall pick. While he did not start out getting much playing time, he has slowly become one of Green Bay’s best defensive players.
Through Week 15, Cooper has played in 11 games (he missed three games with a hamstring injury), accumulated 59 tackles, 3.5 sacks, seven tackles for loss, an interception, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery.
In the Packers’ Week 15 victory over the Seattle Seahawks, which was Cooper’s first game back from injury, he recorded seven tackles, a sack, and an interception on his way to winning the NFC Defensive Player of the Week. It was the second time this season that he has won that particular award, making him the first Packers player since Clay Matthews to win it twice in a season.
Cooper previous won the award back in Week Eight when he had nine tackles, a sack, and a forced fumble against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Green Bay Packers Special Teams Coordinator Rich Bisaccia Calls Edgerrin Cooper “Frosty”
Earlier this week, Packers special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia revealed that he calls Cooper “Frosty,” but would not reveal the reason why. Cooper recorded three of his tackles against the Seahawks while playing special teams.
On Saturday, Cooper told reporters that Frosty is the name of his horse:
Yesterday, Rich Bisaccia told us Edgerrin Cooper’s nickname is “Frosty” but wouldn’t reveal why.
Turns out Cooper bought a horse named Frosty when he moved to Green Bay. He has another named Cinco here.

“It’s the name of my horse,” Cooper said. “Since I got here, he’s been naming me Frosty.”
According to Bill Huber of Sports Illustrated, Cooper grew up in Covington, Louisiana where several of his friends had horses, but he did not.
“God blessed me in this position, so I was able to get my own,” he said. In addition to Frosty, Cooper has another horse named Cinco.
