After the Green Bay Packers collapsed in the Wild Card round of the NFL Playoffs, many fans wanted the organization to move on from head coach Matt LaFleur and general manager Brian Gutekunst. After all, Ed Policy just took over as President and CEO of the franchise last summer, and some wondered if he might want to install his own leadership team in their place.
The fact that the loss came against the hated Chicago Bears did not help.
However, after days of waiting, fans were greeted with the news that the Packers had agreed to a contract extension with LaFleur. Later, it was revealed that contract extensions for Gutekunst and vice president Russ Ball had also been done.
Going forward, Policy will keep Green Bay’s leadership team in tact as they chase a Super Bowl appearance and, hopefully, victory.
Green Bay Packers President and CEO Ed Policy explains why he extended Matt LaFleur and Brian Gutekunst

While there are still many fans who think Green Bay should have moved on from their head coach and/or general manager, Policy certainly believes that he made the right decision to bring them back.
In his monthly newsletter that was released today, he wrote:
“As we turn the page to the 2026 season, I am extremely optimistic and confident in our football leadership – Brian, Matt, and Russ – and their ability to get the right people in the right places for us to compete for our ultimate goal, a Super Bowl championship.
“It goes without saying, our season didn’t end the way we wanted, but the season only ends the way you want for one team. That’s the business.
“I spent substantial time in the weeks following the season with our football leaders ensuring we are all aligned in purpose and communicating clearly and directly. I firmly believe we have the right people and a solid process for success.
“We have the distinct privilege of working for the Packers and everyone in our organization will continue striving tirelessly to develop and support a championship-caliber team.”
As one can see, the decision to extend both LaFleur and Gutekunst was made because Policy believes they are the right leaders to bring the Lombardi Trophy home to Green Bay. A great deal of work needs to be done in order for that to happen, but it is good to know that it is at the forefront on Policy’s mind.
