Former Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers may not have the best headlines to his name since being traded to the New York Jets, but there is no doubt that, at the end of the day, he is one of the greatest throwers of the football of all time. When he does decided to call it a career, he will get into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on the first ballot after the Packers retire his number and induct him into their own Hall of Fame.
Rodgers’ 494 career touchdowns rank fifth on the NFL’s all-time list, and he holds multiple career passing records as well. Throughout the course of his long and storied career, the former Packers quarterback has thrown touchdown passes to many different pass catchers.
And one almost forgotten such player may be making an NFL comeback soon.
Former Green Bay Packers Tight End Dominique Dafney Has Signed with the Carolina Panthers
Packers fans will be forgiven in they do not recall the name Dominique Dafney right away. He only appeared in 15 games for Green Bay between the 2020 and 2021 seasons, both years in which Rodgers won the NFL MVP Award.
After going undrafted in 2020, Dafney signed with the Indianapolis Colts, but was cut after training camp. Green Bay picked him up and signed him to their practice squad.
Traveling between the practice squad and the active roster for two years, Dafney caught two passes in each season. One of them was a touchdown pass against the Chicago Bears in the final game of the 2020 season, a contest which the Packers won 35-16.
Dafney’s one and only touchdown catch came with 3:57 left in the second quarter and put Green Bay up 21-10.
The Packers released Dafney during training camp in 2022, and he was quickly signed and released by the Denver Broncos. He did, however, spend nine days on the practice squad of the Indianapolis Colts during the 2022 season.
In early 2023, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed Dafney to a reserve/future contract. Unfortunately, he was released in mid-August of that year with an injury settlement.
He has not been on an NFL roster of any kind since.
Until today.
According to NFL insider Aaron Wilson, Dafney was just signed by the Carolina Panthers and placed on their practice squad:
#Panthers also signed Dominique Dafney to practice squad in addition to Thomas Incoom, Emani Bailey, and, soon, T.J. Luther, placed Dillon Johnson and Stephen Sullivan on practice squad injured list
— Aaron Wilson (@AaronWilson_NFL) December 3, 2024
The Panthers currently have Ja’Tavion Sanders, Tommy Tremble, and Feleipe Franks as their three active tight ends. Ian Thomas was put on injured reserve on November 18.
While it may be a longshot for Dafney to play this week, it is very possible that he could crack the active roster in the final five weeks of the season.
If he does, it would be his first NFL game since 2021.
