The Green Bay Packers made some tough decisions over the last few seasons. Trading away Davante Adams and Aaron Rodgers over the last two off-seasons resulted in the team not having to commit another large contract to either player. While that was “worth it” is another debate.
However, the Packers are on the hook for over $40 million in dead cap after the Rodgers trade. The Packers certainly committed to an “unofficial youth movement” this past off-season and that may mean more moves are on the way. Especially if it saves the Packers a significant amount of cap space.
The Green Bay Packers Could Save A Lot Of Salary Cap Space By Cutting De’Vondre Campbell
Pete Dougherty of PackersNews.com highlighted how and why this could be it for Campbell in Green Bay:
Not sure if this is it for Campbell, very well might be, turned 30 this year, has had several injuries the last 1½ seasons, those are all big concerns. I could maybe see them trying to squeeze another year out of him, depending on how high they draft an ILB next April.
This came after Dougherty answered this question:
Outside of Jordan Love, who are the two or three intriguing young guys who you want to see in our last nine games step up. For me it’s Karl Brooks, Carrington Valentine and Sean Rhyan. If those three are “real,” our entire draft changes. Wild card would be Isaiah McDuffie. I think this is it for De’Vondre Campbell. Thoughts?
In 2021, the Packers acquired Campbell for $2 million on a one-year deal. Campbell has been a valued member of the team ever since. After earning All-Pro honors, the Packers gave him a five-year, $50 million contract that expires in 2024.
It may be difficult to trade him next year (if they were interested in doing so) due to his $14.4 million cap hit. If the Packers feel he can contribute at a high level for one more year, it may make sense to keep him. Otherwise move on after the 2023 season and save as much as you can salary cap wise.
