The Green Bay Packers are looking to make personnel changes to its new 4-3 defensive scheme and one of the players that would fit that scheme is pending free agent Devin White. White was the fifth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft out of LSU.
He won a Super Bowl title with Tampa Bay and played a large role in that title run. Devin White has played his entire NFL career with the Buccaneers. He is only 26 years old.
A season ago with Tampa Bay, he recorded 83 tackles, 2.5 sacks, two interceptions, and six pass deflections. Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht spoke to Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times about White’s future with the ball club and it doesn’t look very good.
Licht told Stroud by saying:
“No, we’re still trying to make some decisions on some of those other players. But, you know, Devin did some really good things for us throughout his career, but we’re still sorting out some things.”
This doesn’t sound like Tampa Bay is going to bring him back. This would be a golden opportunity for the Packers to sign Devin White in free agency and bring on a veteran who knows the position well.
He lost his starting job to K.J. Britt towards the end of last season. White appears to be moving on from the team within the next couple of weeks.
A Former Green Bay Packers Pro Bowler Thinks It Would Be an Excellent Idea to Bring Devin White On Board
Former Green Bay Packers pro bowler Mike Daniels thinks that the addition of White in free agency would help defensive tackle Kenny Clark out big time. He told Freddie Boston of Lombardiavenue.com by saying:
“The Packers are moving to a 4-3. If they bring Devin White in to play next to Campbell, you might as well start fitting Kenny Clark for his gold jacket.”
It would improve the defense because of his talent, but the only thing that the Packers need to be wary of is his 30.8 PPF grade defense against the run this season. Green Bay struggled against the run this season. His talent is something that is worth betting on and it just seemed as if something happened between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and him.
Maybe all White needs is a change of scenery and things will go well for him again. It would be surprising if a contender wouldn’t take a chance on him because of his talent. This would be a nice personnel fit for the Green Bay Packers.
