The Green Bay Packers think that 2023 could be the start of a new and exciting era. The team chose “youth movement” this off-season by moving on from multiple veterans in all three phases (offense, defense, and special teams).
It is hard to believe that the Packers would bring in a veteran free agent, however, would they consider bringing in a younger free agent? Possibly a 25-year-old wide receiver who has 15 career starts under his belt?
Green Bay Packers Once Again Pushed To Sign Wide Receiver Denzel Mims
According to Sayre Bedinger of Lombardi Ave:
Denzel Mims may only need to get healthy before he starts exploring his next NFL possibility, but I really like the idea of him coming to Green Bay. Jason Vrable has proven himself as one of the best wide receiver coaches in the game, and that leads me to believe the Packers should be willing to take on some talent risks like Mims.
Mims has outstanding size and speed. He was a second-round pick by the New York Jets and obviously, that didn’t work out. He was picked up by the Detroit Lions in a trade, and the Lions weren’t impressed with him and waived/injured him within the last couple of weeks.
If I’m the Packers, I’m looking at Mims as like getting an extra fourth-round pick or something. Bring him in, let him reset, and see what you’ve got. There is no “worst-case” scenario with a move like this because there’s very little risk attached.
There was report last season by Adam Schefter that the Packers were interested in either Elijah Moore or Denzel Mims from the Jets. While Moore has since been traded, if the Packers still wish to add Mims to their roster, the time is now.
It had been rather obvious that Denzel Mims had been something of an afterthought and underutilized by the Jets’ offensive scheme. The addition of Randal Cobb and Allen Lazard would likely have only pushed him down even further this season. A 6-foot-3, 207-pound player, he is considered to have downfield skill. Combined with his athleticism, his size can create mismatches for the opponent’s secondary.
