The Green Bay Packers had a disappointing 2022. While they did come within one win of making the playoffs, the team just never looked like the dominant force many thought they would be. One big reason for this was the Green Bay Packers defense. Filled with talent, this unit did not deliver this season and many analysts agree. Cynthia Frelund of NFL.com named the Packers defense as one of the five most underperforming units.

Green Bay Packers Defense Underperforms
All three levels of the defense didn’t finish ranked above 18th in the NFL. This was a unit that was supposed to have an elite secondary with an elite pass rush. Quay Walker was a big question mark but with how he played, the linebackers should have finished higher. Before the season, Frelund pointed to a model that had the three units of the Packers defense finished no lower than 6th in the league. This is a massive letdown and a huge reason why the team underperformed.
A Down Year?
Defense is notoriously volatile from year to year. There are some consistencies that teams can count on but overall, it is very hard to be elite from year to year. This goes the other way as well. Teams can have a down year but then can bounce back the next. This is the hope for the Packers. If the defense can be even just marginally better, it will do wonders for the team.
The Green Bay Packers defense will largely be the same as last year from the players to the coaching staff. A couple of changes will happen here or there but the core unit is intact. They need to prove next year that this season was a fluke.
