There are a great deal of former Green Bay Packers players that are now NFL coaches. Doug Pederson, of course, is the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars and won a Super Bowl as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. Former running back Edgar Bennett is a long-time wide receivers coach and offensive coordinator now with the Las Vegas Raiders. Al Harris is the defensive backs coach of the Dallas Cowboys. Indeed, one does not have to look far to find a former Packers player on a NFL coaching staff.
As it turns out, one more former Packers player is joining the ranks of NFL coaches. Per a news release by the NFL, the Arizona Cardinals terminated the contract of Chris Banjo, who played for the Packers from 2013-2016. According to The Arizona Republic, Banjo plans to join Sean Payton’s coaching staff with the Denver Broncos.
Chris Banjo Has a History with Sean Payton
The Green Bay Packers released Banjo in November of 2016. He was then signed by the New Orleans Saints who were, of course, coached by Payton at the time. Despite Payton’s tendency to be a more offensive minded coach, Banjo enjoyed his best statistical seasons during his two and half seasons with the Saints. In fact, all three of his career interceptions came during the 2017-2018 seasons.
The role that Banjo will have on Payton’s staff is assistant special teams coach. He was primarily a special teams player for the majority of his NFL career.
