The Green Bay Packers and Kansas City Chiefs seem to be in different positions within their franchise. The Packers, while aren’t labeling this a “rebuild” year, are certainly in the midst of a “let’s see what we have” year. Jordan Love has taken over for Aaron Rodgers and the Packers are hoping to have a third franchise quarterback in a row.
Meanwhile, the Chiefs are smack dab in the middle of the Super Bowl window. Fresh off their second Super Bowl win in three seasons, the Chiefs have the reigning MVP in Patrick Mahomes leading their team. However, the two teams have been named in a trade scenario all off-season.
Green Bay Packers And Kansas City Chiefs Named In Massive Trade For LT David Bakhtiari
Back in June, Freddie Boston of Fansided highlighted this trade scenario:
This deal makes so much sense for everyone involved. The hypothetical proposal was put together by Andy Herman of the Pack-A-Day podcast, and it’s perfect. It would send David Bakhtiari to the Kansas City Chiefs, who face some uncertainty at tackle.
“They are the best team in the league, and they are risking a lot with Patrick Mahomes, having Donovan Smith as their left tackle for this season,” said Herman.
As noted earlier, winning the AFC will be no easy task this season, even for the Chiefs. They know too well how poor offensive line play can ruin any championship dreams. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers made 10 quarterback hits and three sacks in their 31-9 Super Bowl victory over the Chiefs two years ago.
The Chiefs would be landing a five-time All-Pro and one of the best pass-protectors in the league. They would have to give up a premium draft pick, but that’s a price worth paying if it results in another Lombardi Trophy. Adding Bakhtiari could be the difference.
Bakhtiari wins. He moves on from a rebuilding team and joins the defending Super Bowl champions, giving him a tremendous opportunity to finally win a championship. The Chiefs win because they solve a potentially big problem at a premium position.
The Packers also win. They receive a premium draft pick and significantly reduce their future cap hits.
Why Did This Trade Scenario Get A Huge Update?
Mina Kimes of ESPN was asked this week on the Rich Eisen Show what element of this year’s Chiefs roster could cause them the most trouble. The offensive line was Kimes’ choice rather than the defense (which has many question marks) or wide receiver corps (which doesn’t have any player who has been in the system longer than two years). Specifically, she cited their starting left tackle, Donovan Smith’s uncertainty:
“The offensive line changes is the second answer that I would give. This is an offensive line that has some change with Donovan Smith coming over at left tackle from Tampa. [He] struggled last year, I think he was the most penalized left tackle in football if I remember correctly. Very different stylistically from playing with Tom Brady where that ball was coming out quickly. You’ve got to pass-protect longer, obviously, with Patrick Mahomes.”
This type of trade likely wouldn’t happen at the beginning of the season. If the Packers find themselves not in contention mid-way through the season, and the Chiefs’ offensive line continues to struggle, this trade becomes infinitely more likely.
The trade suggested by Boston had the Packers getting a second round draft pick for Bakhtiari, that could become a first if the Chiefs were desperate enough.
