Green Bay Packers Expected To Create $21 Million In Cap Space (Report)

The Green Bay Packers salary cap will likely skyrocket during the 2025 season.  Their ability to sign big-name free agents will be more present than it has been in years.  However, in 2023 and 2024 the Packers will be strapped for cash due to a multitude of reasons.  Most notably the Packers are still on the hook for Aaron Rodgers’ massive contract over the next two seasons.

However, one report has surfaced that can create more than $20 million in cap space for the team next year.

The Green Bay Packers Expected To Save More Than $21 Million By Cutting David Bakhtiari After This Season

A report by ESPN’s Dan Graziano suggested that former Pro Bowl running back Aaron Jones is likely to leave the team next offseason as a cap casualty. Considering the onerous contract David Bakhtiari has, Jones might not be alone:

“Jones will have one year left after this season on a deal he had to rework this past offseason to avoid being cut. The Packers would save $11.45 million next year in cap space if they made him a post-June 1 cut,” Graziano wrote. “David Bakhtiari is the most obvious cap-saving move for Green Bay, but his circumstances are different and well-publicized.”

The financial circumstances of Bakhtiari’s deal only grow worse next year, when the cost of restructures render his salary cap hit a whopping $40 million. Green Bay can save $21.5 million by cutting or trading Bakhtiari next offseason.

Would The Packers Actually Consider Moving On From Bakhtiari?

The Green Bay Packers’ five-time All-Pro left tackle was placed on injured reserve prior to their Thursday Night matchup against the Lions earlier this season. This was just the latest setback to David Bakhtiari’s incredible career.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported about an hour before the Packers’ game against the Detroit Lions that Bakhtiari had undergone arthroscopic knee surgery, a “precursor” to a more significant surgery aimed at alleviating the cartilage issues Bakhtiari has dealt with throughout the comeback.  Rapoport also reported that he was aiming to come back at full strength in 2024.

Two out of the last three seasons Bakhtiari has played just one game (2021 and 2023).  As much as he is loved by the fan base and the team, it wouldn’t be surprising to cut ties with the All-Pro left tackle given his contract and his inability to stay on the field over recent years.
