The Green Bay Packers need a safety badly coming out of the 2023 NFL Draft. Their current projected starters at safety are Darnell Savage and Tarvarius Moore. The Packers need depth at the position after losing Adrian Amos to free agency this offseason. The Packers are still keeping the doors open to bring the safety and former team captain back, and a new move made Tuesday by the front office could help negotiations.
The Packers restructured Darnell Savage’s contract
Account to Field Yates with ESPN, the Packers restructured safety Darnell Savage’s contracts. The move will give the Packers an extra $5.464 million for cap space in 2023.

That freed-up cash can help the Packers sign Amos this offseason. It also helped the team extend quarterback Jordan Love Tuesday. The team needs to act quickly to re-sign Amos because the veteran will be in demand from other teams in the league, including the Chicago Bears.
Green Bay Packers fans react to the restructure
Fans had their opinions on the move not long after the deal was announced. Many predict the savings will help bring Amos back in 2023. Here are the best takes on Twitter of the Packers restructuring Savage’s contract.

The math here means the Packers added 4 void years to Darnell Savage's contract to create the $5.5M. https://t.co/QJ0pVBH67a

Teams always spin these contracts with void years like they're the potential framework of a future deal but they almost never are.

But that also means this team has no starting safeties likely on the roster for 2024. So that's neat. https://t.co/WBeUWJPs1P
