Green Bay Packers Linked to Former All-Pro Wide Receiver as a Possible Christian Watson Replacement

The Green Bay Packers learned some hard lessons in 2024. Going into the season, they believed that their wide receiver core was going to be among the best in the NFL. Unfortunately, that was far from being the case. While Christian Watson dropped just one pass all season and set a career high with 620 receiving yards, his fellow wide receivers, Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed, and Dontayvion Wicks, dropped a combined 25 passes.

As fans know, Green Bay faces the likelihood of playing most of the 2025 NFL season without Watson, who tore his ACL in Week 18 against the Chicago Bears. Obviously, the Packers hope that their other top three wide receivers have bounce-back seasons next year, but even if they do, Green Bay will still need more depth at the position.

Many Fans Believe the Green Bay Packers Need a WR1

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Davante Adams (17) hauls in a pass during third quarter of the Green Bay Packers game against the Detroit Lions at Lambeau Field in Green Bay on Monday, Sept. 20, 2021. The Packers won 35-17.

When the Packers traded away Davante Adams ahead of the 2022 NFL Draft, they selected three receivers to help try and replace him. They also signed free agent pass catcher Sammy Watkins, who did not complete the year with Green Bay.

In the 2023 NFL Draft, they took three more wide receivers and signed undrafted free agent Malik Heath.

And while their current group of pass catchers can be considered solid, none have proven that they can be Jordan Love’s go-to weapon. Sure, they have each displayed flashes of that ability, but none has done so on a consistent basis.

This is why many fans and analysts believe the Packers should try to acquire a top-tier wide receiver in free agency or via trade. Tee Higgins is a popular target among fans, as is Adams.

One NFL writer, though, has another player in mind.

The Green Bay Packers Urged to Trade for Los Angeles Rams Wide Receiver Cooper Kupp

In a recent article posted by Clutch Points, Dakota Zientek suggests that the Packers look into a possible trade with the Los Angeles Rams in an effort to acquire former All-Pro wide receiver Cooper Kupp:

“Following their Wild Card exit in the 2024 NFL Playoffs, Los Angeles Rams receiver Cooper Kupp was cryptic in his wording on whether he wanted to stay with Sean McVay and Matthew Stafford in the 2025 season.

“As a former triple-crown winner, Kupp is clearly a talented receiver. However, following some injury issues and the fact that he isn’t getting any younger, there’s a belief that Kupp could’ve played his last game with the Rams in their matchup against the Washington Commanders in the Wild Card round.

“So, if the Packers can get it done, trading for Kupp to help with Love’s development seems like a no-brainer if both sides can agree on a deal.”

In 2021, Kupp won the wide receiver Triple Crown by leading the NFL in receptions (145), receiving yards (1,947), and receiving touchdowns (16).

The problem, though, is that he is frequently injured. 2019 and 2021 are the only years in which he has played a full season’s worth of games. Over the last three years, he has missed 18 contests.

If the Packers are looking for a replacement for Watson, perhaps they should look for someone who does not have trouble staying on the field.
