The Green Bay Packers are preparing to face the Indianapolis Colts in Sunday’s home opener for the 2024 season. Green Bay and Indianapolis are both 0-1 to start the 2024 season. Both teams want to avoid dropping to 0-2 to start the season.
Entering this season, the Packers had high expectations. However, some of those expectations could be derailed because of the latest injury to quarterback Jordan Love.
Fansided Writer Cody Williams Thinks That the Green Bay Packers Should Make a Trade For Cleveland Browns Quarterback Jameis Winston
Fansided writer Cody Williams created a mock trade between the Green Bay Packers and the Cleveland Browns. He thinks the Packers should acquire quarterback Jameis Winston and a sixth-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft for a 2025 fifth-round pick and a 2026 fifth-round pick.
This would be a shocking decision for both parties. Williams said about his mock trade:
“Winston, aside from some void money that stretches out the next few years, is ostensibly on a one-year deal with the Browns. Given their investment in Watson, Cleveland isn’t turning over the keys of the offense to Winston or anyone else, even with how badly that might turn out from them based on what we saw in Week 1. Thus, getting a pair of fifth-round picks in exchange for Winston and a late-rounder makes all the sense in the world for them.
For the Packers side of the equation, this should be a no-brainer from the jump. Winston is the perfect quarterback to step into the building, pick up a vanilla offense and keep the ship afloat. He offers the upside to keep Green Bay competitive enough that the bottom doesn’t fall out but also won’t start any quarterback controversy once Love is healthy again — and provides insurance for the rest of the season as well.
One could argue that the Packers should’ve taken the backup quarterback job a bit more seriously to begin with in the offseason because anyone with eyes and NFL knowledge could see that Willis is anything but a sure option. End of the day, however, that’s the bed they made but this trade for Winston would be a way to at least fluff the pillows on that bed while Love is out of action.”
Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur has made it clear that Malik Willis will start against the Indianapolis Colts if Jordan Love does not play. It would also mean that Sean Clifford will be elevated from the practice squad and be the backup quarterback for the Green Bay Packers.
No Chance Cleveland Makes This Trade
With everything going on with Deshaun Watson right now, there is no way that the Cleveland Browns would trade away Jameis Winston. There is no doubt that Winston is probably going to play for Cleveland at some point this season.
In the offseason, maybe the Green Bay Packers should have signed Winston to be Jordan Love’s backup quarterback but it is too late now. Jameis Winston would have won the job as the backup no doubt if he signed here instead. Sean Clifford and Michael Pratt didn’t make the team out of camp and that’s why they traded for Malik Willis.
