Green Bay Packers GM Brian Gutekunst Names 3 Youngsters That Can Make Cornerback Competition Spicy, Says He’s Excited for Them to Get A Chance

The Green Bay Packers are starting a new era when it comes to their cornerback department with the departure of their long-time CB Jaire Alexander who is now with the Baltimore Ravens.

Green Bay Packers safety Xavier McKinney (29) celebrates with cornerback Carrington Valentine (24) after intercepting a pass against San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brandon Allen during their game on Sunday, Nov. 24, 2024, at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin. It was McKinney’s seventh interception of the season.

Alexander leaving, in a sense, does not affect the line-up that match as he was out of the game for a long time due to unfortunate injuries. Head coach Matt LaFleur had Keisean Nixon and Carrington Valentine manning the CB assignment up.

For general manager Brian Gutekunst, the squad will still feel huge changes and that is something that will benefit the younger guys. He believes the team got promising cornerbacks and now, they have an opportunity to prove themselves.

“Between Kalen King, Kamal Hadden and Micah Robinson, I think there’s going to be really good competition for the backend of the roster [at cornerback],” Gutekunst told reporters via Packers Wire.

“I’m excited to give those guys that opportunity.”

Alexander was with the team since 2018. He played just 14 games in the last two seasons after getting plagued by knee injuries.

The youngsters will get their time but for now, Nixon, Valentine, and new signing Nate Hobbs will carry the heavy load.

He thinks the experience of these guys can help them deliver what is needed from them.

“We have three guys that have combined started over 90 games in the National Football League and I feel really good about those three guys and the versatility they bring,” Gutekunst said.

“All three guys are able to play inside out and outside”.

Nixon, a two-time member of the First Team All-Pro, played 17 games last year and made 61 solo tackles. Valentine, meanwhile, had 18 tackles last season which is only his second year.

Hobbs is the newest addition to team after signing a four-year, $48 million contract last March from the Las Vegas Raiders. He recorded 281 tackles so far in his four years in the league.
