Over the last few year, former Green Bay Packers quarterback and Pro Football Hall of Famer Brett Favre has become a bit of a political symbol for Donald Trump and his MAGA supporters. Leading up to the 2024 Presidential election, Favre filmed several commercials campaigning for Trump, who defeated current Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris in November.
Favre also made an appearance at a Trump rally in Green Bay, as did current Packers running back AJ Dillon.
The three-time NFL MVP has made no secret of his disdain for President Joe Biden and the Democratic party, or the “woke” culture he perceives is too prevalent in the United States. For example, he recently posted on X complaining that an Allstate commercial was aired by networks during the National Anthem of the Sugar Bowl:
I heard:
There was no televised National Anthem for Sugar Bowl yesterday.
Instead a DEI message by @Allstate CEO.
Woke is a joke.
— Brett Favre (@BrettFavre) January 4, 2025
It is worth noting, though, that Favre did not watch the beginning of the Sugar Bowl, if he even watched at all, as he stated he “heard” that the National Anthem was not aired. However, both ESPN and the SEC Network did air the Anthem, as well as a moment of silence.
Former Green Bay Packers Quarterback Brett Favre Criticizes Joe Biden and the Medal of Freedom Ceremony
Saturday night saw President Biden award the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest honor for a civilian of the United States. The recipients of the medal this year are:
- Hillary Clinton
- George Soros
- Bono
- Michael J. Fox
- Denzel Washington
- Jose Andres
- Bill Nye the Science Guy
- Lionel Messi
- Magic Johnson
- Ash Carter (posthumously)
- Fannie Lou Hamer (posthumously)
- Robert F. Kennedy (posthumously)
- George Romney (posthumously)
- Tim Gill
- Jane Goodall
- Ralph Lauren
- David M. Rubenstein
- George Stevens Jr.
- Anna Wintour
Favre was not impressed with the honorees or the ceremony, it seems:
What words would you use to describe the White House medals that were given out because I’m honestly speechless. 😶
— Brett Favre (@BrettFavre) January 4, 2025
“You all you all literally embody the nation’s creed, e pluribus unum – out of many, one,” Biden told the recipients. “You feed the hungry. You give hope to those who are hurting, and you craft the signs and sounds our movements and our memories.”
Many fans agreed with Favre’s post on social media, though some were quick to bring up a lingering controversy surrounding the former Packers quarterback:
Still not as bad as you stealing from welfare
— Tyler Moore (@TylerMoore614) January 5, 2025
As fans may recall, Favre is accused of stealing welfare money from the state of Mississippi to fund a volleyball stadium at the university his daughter attends. However, he has not been indicted on any formal charges. He has been ordered to repay over $1 million to the state for unfulfilled speaking engagements, $700,000 of which he has yet to give back.
