Many Green Bay Packers fans would probably roll their eyes if you mentioned Brayden Narveson’s name in their vicinity. However, it’s understandable why the fans would react that way towards a rookie who hasn’t played a full NFL season.
The young rookie beat Greg Joseph at the starting kicker position, and the man booted from Lambeau Field is enjoying a fantastic year with the New York Giants. Meanwhile, the North Carolina State product struggles to find his footing in Green Bay.
Pockets of Packers fans felt like they had seen enough of the rookie kicker after four weeks and want the coaching staff to find a more capable replacement for the 25-year-old. The team did try out two kickers to replace him, but the results may leave fans more frustrated than happy.
Green Bay Packers keep Brayden Narveson in the squad after attempting to find his replacements
Sports Illustrated’s Bill Huber wrote about the team’s move to try out new kickers to take over Narveson’s position. However, it seems like the Packers didn’t have any serious plans in replacing the young kicker:
The Green Bay Packers worked out a pair of veteran kickers on Tuesday, Chad Ryland and Lucas Havrisik, but no signings were made, according to a source.
Publicly, the Packers have thrown their support behind Narveson, the rookie with the strong leg but a penchant for kicking the ball to the right. That Narveson remains the kicker shows those weren’t just empty words.
Narveson isn’t necessarily having a terrible time with the Packers. The undrafted rookie has a 9-for-13 kicking accuracy through four games of the season, ranking him 28th among kickers in the NFL. However, Huber also pointed out that the best kicker in NFL history—Baltimore Ravens’ Justin Tucker—is at a 62.5% kicking clip.
There are still 13 games left in the season, and there are plenty of opportunities for Narveson to change the hostile narratives surrounding him. Fans can be sure that the young man will do everything possible to prove his worth to the rest of the league.
