The Green Bay Packers enter the 2024 season with a ton of hype and optimism. After a year where there were many question marks to begin the season, the Packers rode the ship, played well in December, and ultimately made the NFC Divisional Playoffs. They did fall to San Francisco on the road 24-21. Many of the contributing players from last season return this year. The Green Bay Packers are a popular pick to be one of the better teams in the NFC. Here is why I agree.
The Green Bay Packers Have One of the Best Quarterbacks in the NFL
In today’s NFL, you have no shot to win a Super Bowl without good quarterback play. The Green Bay Packers have that. While there still isn’t a huge sample size on Jordan Love, he was great the second half of last season and in the playoffs. He completed 64% of his passes, over 4,000 yards and 32 touchdowns.
With a new contract almost certainly coming any day now, there is more film on Love. He will have to at least perform the way he did last season if the Packers are going to get to where they want to be. It’s a breath of fresh air knowing the Green Bay Packers have their franchise quarterback for many years to come.
The Green Bay Packers Have One of the Deepest Receiving Rooms in the League
The Green Bay Packers don’t have a clear number one receiver, Most of the top teams in the league do. Sure, it could be an issue, but the Packers have six to seven wide receivers that can take over a game when it matters most. All of them return from last season too.
As a rookie, Jayden Reed led the team with 793 yards on 64 receptions and 94 targets. Romeo Doubs was not far behind with 674 yards on 59 receptions and 96 targets. The secret weapon could be the tight ends. Luke Musgrave and Tucker Kraft combined for only 65 receptions, but both dealt with some injuries throughout the year. In particular, Musgrave seemed to catch his footing near the end of the season. He could have a monster second year.
A New Defensive Coordinator Mixed With New and Veteran Talent
Jeff Hafley has not coached a game as the new defensive coordinator yet. However, he is winning at the press conferences right now. This is a coordinator who wants to be aggressive and get after the quarterback. The players have seemed to buy into the system early.
It’s hard not to be excited about at least new leadership on that side of the ball. The three years under Joe Barry were not great and was never great from day one. It was a mediocre hire and everyone could see it. Matt LaFleur rightfully took some heat for it. He has to get this hire of Hafley right.
