The Green Bay Packers don’t have many areas of concern heading into the 2024 season. Their biggest “weakness” is the amount of youth across the roster. However, that could also very well be their strength.
One 26-year-old seems to be curing one “area of weakness” early on in training camp.
Green Bay Packers: 26-Year-Old Establishing Himself As The Starter
According to Ryan Wood of USA Today:
Anders Carlson’s hot start to camp continues. Just made field goals from 47M, 44R and 50L.
He’s now 14-15 in camp.
In addition to Turner, a rookie out of Michigan, Carlson faces Greg Joseph, who was the kicker for the Vikings for the last three years. It is expected that the Packers will let the three-way competition play out during training camp and that the kickers will rotate days when they practice live kicking.
In 2023, Carlson struggled as a rookie. Although he converted 81.8% of his field goal attempts (which is higher than Mason Crosby’s career percentage), he only converted 87.2% of his extra point attempts.
It was Carlson’s leg strength that made the Packers take a chance on him. In fact, he has the potential to become an excellent NFL kicker. Carlson, however, was just 4/8 on field goals between 40-49 yards and 3/5 on kicks 50 yards or longer.
Hopefully Carlson can get in his groove and solidify himself as a long-term starter in this league.
