Green Bay Packers kicker Anders Carlson has received stiff competition this training camp and offseason from veteran Greg Joseph and other kickers. Carlson has been up and down throughout training camp, but he had a major bounce-back performance during Family Night.
Anders Carlson was a rookie last season and Joseph has been in the NFL for several years. Carlson made 81.8% of his field goals last season and 87.2% of his extra points. The issue with him last season was the postseason Anders Carlson missed five extra points in postseason games and he also missed a field goal attempt.
This was one of the reasons why the Green Bay Packers decided to bring in competition this offseason for him. There are still three preseason games to decide who will be the kicker this season.
Lombardiavenue.com Writer Freddie Boston Thinks Greg Joseph Will Be the Green Bay Packers Kicker Over Anders Carlson
Lombardiavenue.com writer Freddie Boston made predictions for the 53-man roster for the Packers this season. On special teams, he predicts that Greg Joseph is going to win the job over Anders Carlson. Boston said:
“The kicking competition is too close to call ahead of the preseason. After missing three kicks on Thursday, Anders Carlson bounced back with a strong performance at Family Night. However, veteran Greg Joseph might have taken a slight advantage.
Packer Report’s Andy Herman has Joseph at 37/41 on kicks this summer, with Carlson 33/41. That’s a 90.2 conversion percentage compared to 80.5.”
Greg Joseph played for the Minnesota Vikings last season. He made 80 percent of his field goals and only missed two extra points last season. Joseph is 30 years old and Carlson is 26 years old. It will be interesting to see how the Packers will play both of them in preseason games.
The kicking game is going to be very important for Green Bay this season. In the past, special teams have played a major role in why the Packers have not made Super Bowl appearances. They don’t want poor special teams again. Greg Joseph has a great chance to make the team over Anders Carlson. If Carlson does not make the team. someone would probably take a chance on him.
