When the Green Bay Packers traded Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets following the 2022 NFL season, it was the highest-profile decision of their offseason when it came to parting ways with older veteran players. One other decision that had far worse ramifications was not re-signing kicker Mason Crosby, the franchise’s all-time leading scorer.
Instead of rolling with the reliable Crosby, Green Bay drafted Anders Carlson in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft. While the Auburn product has an undeniably strong leg, his accuracy and consistency have always been a concern.
And the Packers found out why.
Anders Carlson Struggled for the Green Bay Packers
In his only season with the Packers, Carlson made 81.8% of his field goals, which is not a bad mark. However, he missed five extra point attempts for a 87.2% success rate, which is quite terrible. In addition, he led the whole NFL in missed kicks.
While Carlson was not the sole reason for any of Green Bay’s losses last season, it is worth noting that they lost a game by three or less points three times in contests in which he missed a field goal.
Due to his inconsistency, the Packers brought in Greg Joseph to compete with Carlson during training camp. Unfortunately, neither kicker performed well and the team opted to cut ties with both of them in favor of Brayden Narveson.
Of course, Narveson struggled as well and was replaced by Brandon McManus after six weeks.
While the kicker carousel turned in Green Bay, Carlson and Joseph bounced around the NFL. Joseph beat out Carlson for a spot on the Detroit Lions practice squad and was eventually signed by the New York Giants when their kicker went down with an injury.
After getting injured himself, Joseph was released again and picked up by the Washington Commanders. He kicked in one game for them before being put back on their practice squad and then released.
Carlson, meanwhile, was signed by the San Francisco 49ers to fill in for their two injured kickers. Once Jake Moody got healthy, he was released and subsequently signed by the New York Jets.
Former Green Bay Packers Kicker Anders Carlson Is Getting Replaced by Greg Joseph on the Jets
Between the 49ers and Jets, Carlson has made 86.7% of his field goals and just 80% of his extra points. In New York’s latest loss, he missed a field goal and an extra point attempt.
With Rodgers and the Jets desperate for wins as they end yet another disappointing season, it appears New York is going to follow Green Bay’s original plan of trying to replace the struggling kicker with Joseph.
Joseph’s agent posted on X this morning:
The New York Jets just signed my client Greg Joseph (K, FAU) to their practice squad. 7-year vet recently filled in for the Washington Commanders as well as the New York Giants earlier this season.

Packers fans, of course, had some thoughts on this development:
Anders Carlson missed some kicks, so the team signed Greg Joseph.

They’re just going to keep signing Packers castaways until they realize Max McGee is dead https://t.co/MrxT8XuKjt

If Joseph suits up for New York in either of their next two games, he will be their fifth kicker of the season.
