The Green Bay Packers have been bringing in different kickers to compete with Greg Joseph and Anders Carlson throughout the offseason and training camp. Green Bay signed kicker Alex Hale on Tuesday and he is Australian and also an undrafted rookie from the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Tuesday was also his first NFL workout.
Hale was the only kicker who participated in practice on Wednesday for Green Bay. He made 5-of-6 field goals. Alex Hale made them from 33 yards out twice, 40, 41, and 44 yards out. The only field goal that Austin Hale missed was from 45 yards out.
He told Matt Schneidman of The Athletic about being with the Green Bay Packers after being elsewhere just a couple of weeks ago:
“Just shocked. Didn’t expect to be this far. Two weeks ago, I was just sitting in San Diego training by myself and with John. Didn’t think I’d be here right now.”
He trained with former NFL kicker John Carney. It will be interesting to see what happens next for Alex Hale.
Green Bay Packers Kicker Greg Joseph Appears To Have the Slight Edge Over Anders Carlson and Alex Hale At the Moment
For now, it appears as if Greg Joseph has the edge in the kicking job for the Packers entering the 2024 season. Anders Carlson was a rookie a season ago. His postseason struggles are what opened up the kicking competition for this training camp and off-season period.
Joseph and Carlson both struggled on Tuesday in training camp. This could be a reason why Green Bay decided to sign Alex Hale and make things more interesting in the kicking battle before the 2024 season. Will see what happens in the kicking department in the next practice.
The Packers will also have a preseason game against the Cleveland Browns on Saturday. How will head coach Matt LaFleur decide the kicking battle in that game? It is going to feel like an eternity between now and the start of the season to see who wins the kicking job.
At Oklahoma State, he made 27-of-34 field goals last season and 36-for-38 on extra-point attempts. He made 43-of-54 field goals and 71-of-74 extra points in five seasons with the Oklahoma State Cowboys in five college seasons. In 2017, he came over to the United States of America. Even if Alex Hale doesn’t win the kicking job, it is a good story for him that he was able to get a try with the Green Bay Packers in training camp.
