The Green Bay Packers roster is coming into focus. While most of the signings have been to bolster the special teams, there is one position the team still needs to figure out, the backup quarterback. Teams hope never to have to use their backup quarterback but injuries happen and having a competent second quarterback can be the difference in making or missing the playoffs. The Green Bay Packers should look to the XFL and sign AJ McCarron.
Green Bay Packers: AJ McCarron A Possible Backup?
McCarron has extensive NFL experience. He has played for the Bengals, Bills, Raiders, Texans, and Falcons. In some cases, he has played meaningful snaps for those teams. In the XFL, he is lighting up the league. He has thrown for over 1,500 yards and has thrown 17 touchdowns against only four interceptions. He leads the league in TD: INT ratio and touchdown passes while only being behind former Cowboys quarterback Ben DiNucci in passing yards. McCarron would provide experience with the upside that the Packers are looking for.

XFL Provides Opportunity
The great thing about the XFL and the upcoming USFL season is that teams can get a look at what players look like on the field. McCarron has made the most of his opportunity and if the Packers do not sign him, chances are some other team looks to add him to the room. With two leagues in the spring and an upcoming Arena Football League revival, NFL teams are getting more and more opportunities to scout players for their rosters.

Overall, an interesting aspect of this season is how many XFL and USFL players make it onto NFL rosters. Maybe it is the development league the NFL dreams about or maybe it is its own contained league. Regardless, the Green Bay Packers should absolutely give AJ McCarron, and maybe other XFL quarterbacks, a look once the season is over.
