Green Bay Packers running back AJ Dillon re-signed with the team on a 1-year deal this offseason. There were many times a season ago when it was mentioned that he wouldn’t re-sign or be traded at the NFL trade deadline. Neither of those things occurred and for now, Dillon is back.
Entering the 2024 season, A.J. Dillon is the number two running back on the Green Bay Packers depth chart behind Josh Jacobs. Rookie Marshawn Lloyd and Emanuel Wilson are behind Dillon on the Packers depth chart and they are both looking to make the roster.
A season ago, the Green Bay Packers only kept three running backs on the roster. Will they keep three running backs on the roster again this season or will they keep four running backs on the 53-man roster?
Bleacher Report Writer Ryan Fowler Thinks That the Green Bay Packers Should Put Running Back A.J. Dillon On the Trade Block
Ryan Fowler of Bleacher Report wrote an article about one player each NFL team should put on the trade block this preseason. For Green Bay, he thinks that they should put running back A.J. Dillon on the trade block. Fowler said:
“With two additions surrounding him on the depth chart, running back AJ Dillon faces a questionable future in Green Bay.
Josh Jacobs replaces Aaron Jones as the starter, and third-rounder MarShawn Lloyd is a player who’ll be hard to keep off the field due to his blend of speed and power—ultimately leaving Dillon as the third back in the rotation for carries.
Dillon signed a one-year deal to return to Green Bay for 2024. While the team could very well play out the year with him and part ways following the campaign without any contractual ties, exploring the market for teams in need of a veteran ball-carrier could see the Packers steal a draft pick in return.
Behind Dillon, young players in Jarveon Howard and Emmanuel Wilson project as players who could handle a deep rotational role.”
It would feel like a no-brainer to put Dillon on the trade block if rookie Marshawn Lloyd was healthy at the moment. The problem is who knows how long Lloyd will be out with a hamstring injury. The Green Bay Packers do have high hopes for the third-round rookie. Wilson had a great preseason outing against the Cleveland Browns and has been very good in training camp.
Last season, Dillon played 15 games with Green Bay. He rushed for 613 yards on 178 carries and two touchdowns, averaging 3.4 yards per carry. A.J. Dillon also caught 22 passes for 223 yards receiving and zero touchdowns. He averaged 10.1 yards per reception and was targeted 28 times. Even though those are not great numbers, he is always available for the Packers and they may want to not trade him for now.
