Aaron Rodgers was a first-round pick for the Green Bay Packers in the 2005 NFL Draft. He was with the Packers from 2005-2022.
Rodgers was then traded from the Packers to the New York Jets after the 2022 NFL season. Aaron Rodgers has spent the last two seasons with the Jets. In his first season with New York, he tore his Achilles on just four snaps against the Buffalo Bills in Week 1. Last season, the New York Jets finished with a 5-12 record and missed the playoffs.
Former Green Bay Packers Quarterback Aaron Rodgers Could Be Cap Casualty For the New York Jets This Offseason
The Bleacher Report Scouting Department listed cap casualties for at least three players on each NFL team entering the NFL offseason. For the New York Jets, one of the players who could get released this offseason is Aaron Rodgers. The Bleacher Report Scouting Department said:
“Rodgers is listed as the third option here because the cap savings aren’t as good or immediate as the receivers that are associated with him. The Jets don’t have a way of saving anything against the cap by trading or releasing him before June 1. It would get him off their books completely in the 2026 season, but it would also come with a $49 million dead-cap charge.
Instead, the Jets are more likely to designate him as a post-June 1 cut and pocket $9.5 million in 2025 savings. However, that would push a $35 million dead-cap charge into 2026.”
The cap casualty for the former Green Bay Packers quarterback would be $23.5 million post-June 1. Aaron Rodgers is 41 years old. This past season for the New York Jets, he completed 63.0% of his passes for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. It would be interesting to see if Rodgers would retire or not if he was released by the Jets.
Keep An Eye On the Minnesota Vikings To Sign Aaron Rodgers
Packers fans may not like this, but if Rodgers was released by the Jets this offseason, there is a chance that the Minnesota Vikings could sign him for next year. Sam Darnold is a free agent for the Vikings and they could very well not re-sign him.
There is a chance that J.J. McCarthy may not be ready to start the 2025 season for Minnesota depending on how his rehab goes with his knee. He needed surgery on his torn meniscus that he suffered before the start of the season. McCarthy is only 22 years old and was a first-round pick for the Vikings (10th overall) in 2024.
Also, if Rodgers were to sign with the Vikings, it would be crazy. Brett Favre also played for the Minnesota Vikings after he played for the Jets and the Green Bay Packers. During the 2009 season, Favre got Minnesota to the NFC Championship Game before losing to the New Orleans Saints in overtime. It would be some storyline if Aaron Rodgers was released by the Jets and signed with the Vikings before the 2025 NFL season.
