The Green Bay Packers will have some interesting roster decisions to make before the start of the 2024 season. With two preseason games remaining, a lot of roster spots are still up for grabs. One of the more interesting positions on the roster this season is the wide receiver position.
Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed, and Dontayvion Wicks will be locked to make the 53-man roster this year. Four other players on the roster are competing for two potential spots. They are Samori Toure, Malik Heath, Grant DuBose, and Bo Melton. At one point in camp, it felt like Melton was a lock to make the roster, but isn’t now.
Reports are coming out of training camp that Grant DuBose has performed well for the Green Bay Packers. DuBose led the Packers in receiving yards in the last preseason game with five receptions for 66 yards receiving against the Cleveland Browns.
Packers offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich said about DuBose on Monday to Zach Kruse of packerswire.com:
“Grant had a really good game the other day. Obviously he made some pretty clutch catches, but his effort blocking was excellent as well. I was really pleased with him. He had a really good game.”
Malik Heath caught two passes for 22 yards receiving and Bo Melton caught one pass for 12 yards receiving.
Don’t Be Surprised If the Green Bay Packers Keep 7 Wide Receivers On the Roster
The Packers usually keep six wide receivers on the roster, but it may be hard to cut Heath, Melton, or DuBose. Green Bay is very deep at the wide receiver position. If they were to keep seven on the roster, it means that they would probably keep only three players at the running back position. Emanuel Wilson or A.J. Dillon would be cut on the roster if Green Bay kept seven wide receivers on the roster.
What head coach Matt LaFleur does not care about is if he has a true number-one wide receiver on the roster this season. Watson, Doubs, Reed, and Wicks can all step up at any moment for Green Bay. They also have depth with Heath, Melton, and DuBose. Grant DuBose was a seventh-round pick from Charlotte in the 2023 NFL Draft.
For now, on the Packers depth chart, DuBose is listed with the third unit and Heath and Melton are ahead of him. The next preseason game for the Green Bay Packers will be against the Denver Broncos. The final two preseason games will decide whether or not there will be seven wide receivers on the roster. There is a chance it happens, but don’t count on it.
