Earlier today, the Green Bay Packers 2023 schedule was leaked. Matt Schneidman of The Athletic was the first to report the schedule per a source he had. Green Bay will open the season at Chicago at 3:25 CST on September 10. The Packers have eight home games and nine road games. Now that the schedule is released, here are my three initial thoughts on the schedule.
It’s A Manageable Schedule

Some of the things I and most fans look at is when their teams bye week is and if they have any long stretches away from home. Green Bay’s bye week is week six. I prefer a later bye week in the season to prepare for the home stretch but week six isn’t too bad.
Last year, the Packers had three straight road games and had to travel to London in October. At the end of the day, that takes a toll on coaches and players. This year, the Packers have back to back road games on three occurrences. However, the first set is weeks one and two. the second stretch has a bye week in between so they will go back home for a week. I think those things are just as important as the actual opponent. The less time you’re traveling, the more fresh you will be.
I Love The Thanksgiving Game
For the first time since 2015, the Packers will play on Thanksgiving Day. In 2015, the Green Bay fell to the Bears 16-13. I remember that game as it poured virtually the entire game. This year, they will be in Detroit.
I’m also old enough to remember the Packers playing the Lions on Thanksgiving Day a few times. I think the Thanksgiving games are so much fun to watch. I’m really excited the Packers are the first game as well. With it being Detroit, it’ll be a important game if Green Bay wants to contend in the NFC North.
More Prime Time Games Than I Thought

I knew the Packers would get some prime time games, but I did not expect them to get five. They will host Detroit in week four on Thursday Night Football. Green Bay will also be on Monday Night Football twice, both on the road. In week five they will play the Raiders and week 14 at the Giants. The Packers will be on Sunday Night Football twice as well. That will be week 13 at home against Kansas City and week 17 at Minnesota on New Years Eve.
The Packers brand will also result in multiple prime time games. However, five games are usually reserved for the contending teams. I think Green Bay could contend for a wild card spot, but that’s about it. I like that the Packers have eight noon games are well.
