Good news across the board for 3 Brewers pitchers targeting return

As the Milwaukee Brewers gear up for the postseason, perhaps the most pressing question on fans’ minds is the health of the pitching staff. Fortunately, both the bullpen and the rotation could be getting reinforcements in time for the NLDS based on Saturday’s updates for three missing arms. In particular, good news on Trevor Megill and Jose Quintana comes as a major, if tentative source of relief.

Help likely on the way for depleted pitching staff

Megill has been out since August 25 with elbow issues, with his initial return pushed back from mid-September to later in the month to unknown. Earlier this week, he indicated that he is finally on track in his recovery process, feeling good, and determined to make an appearance before the end of the regular season. Per Adam McCalvy of Mlb.com, Megill is apparently on pace to meet his goal.

Brewers closer Trevor Megill expects to come off the IL pitch against the Reds in Sunday’s regular season finale, even if it’s for one batter.

Does he expect to be on the NLDS roster?

He said it’s up to the club, but, “I definitely see myself being active.”

The most surprising, indeed somewhat concerning, part of the update is the suggestion that a healthy Megill would be left off the NLDS roster. If he is able to pitch on Sunday, that doesn’t make much sense.

With Brandon Woodruff’s injury, having Quintana available is a lot more important than it seemed a week ago. Then, it seemed quite possible that he would not have a spot in the playoff rotation. Now, the Brewers would love to lean on him as one of their four NLDS-roster starters: Freddy Peralta, Quinn Priester, Quintana, and Chad Patrick. Positive news on his status is a massive plus.

Jose Quintana and DL Hall also expressed optimism today about being NLDS-ready.

Hall wants to pitch against the Reds tomorrow but is waiting to see what the club decides.

Quintana said yesterday’s live BP was excellent and he’ll have some kind of sim game late next week.

Hall is probably not part of the Brewers’ postseason plans. Even with all the injuries they had to deal with, they have enough relievers, paired with starters moving to the bullpen for postseason play, that Hall shouldn’t be needed. Nonetheless, it would be reassuring to have him ready and available as insurance.
