For the first time in his 10-year NBA career, Giannis Antetokounmpo had a double-double that did not include his points scored.
Giannis has unique rebound-assist double-double
In the Bucks’ 114-105 win over Atlanta on January 11, Giannis had 18 rebounds, 10 assists but only seven points scored. He became the second player this season to have a double-double that did not include points scored: Chicago’s Alex Caruso on November 6, had four points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists in a contest.
Giannis became the 80th NBA player in history to have a double-double of only rebounds and assists and became the second Bucks’ player to have this rare double-double. The other Bucks’ player to achieve this was Paul Pressey. He did it twice in his career with Milwaukee. On March 7, 1984, he had seven points, 11 assists and 12 rebounds in a Bucks’ loss to the New Jersey Nets. Nine months later, on December 21, 1984, Pressey had six points, 10 rebounds and 13 assists in a Bucks’ win over Philadelphia.
Jason Kidd has the most rebound/assist double-doubles
Former Bucks’ coach Jason Kidd is the king of the rebound-assist double-double. In his playing career, Kidd had 25 games where he had 10 or more rebounds, 10 or more assists, yet scored fewer than 10 points. Current Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green is second on this list with 16 double-double games without the points scored in the double-double.
Following are the players who in their careers had five or more games where they had a double-double without the benefit of points scored.
25-Jason Kidd
16-Draymond Green
8-Norm Van Lier, Wes Unseld, Rajon Rondo
7-Sam Lacey, Bill Russell
6-Magic Johnson, Nate McMillan
5-Darrell Walker, Nikola Jokic
A double-double with no points scored?
For the record, there have been three times where a player had a double-double with rebounds and assists but did not score any points. Norm Van Lier did it in 1971 with Cincinnati when he had a game with 11 rebounds, 13 assists and no points.
The last two times it happened were just last year: On December 26, 2021, Josh Giddey of Oklahoma City had 10 rebounds, 10 assists and no points in a game versus New Orleans. Tomas Satoransky of Washington had 10 rebounds, 13 assists and no points in a game against Orlando.
