Freddy Peralta Surpasses Nolan Ryan For A MLB Record

The 2021 Milwaukee Brewers have been lead by a dominant pitching staff.   Opening day starter Brandon Woodruff currently has a 2.14 ERA, Corbin Burnes 2.12, and Freddy Peralta 2.17!  After his last start, Freddy Peralta has surpassed Nolan Ryan for a MLB record!

Anytime you can be in the same stratosphere as Nolan Ryan, you know something is going extremely well.  This record certainly shows just how un-hittable Freddy Peralta has been all season!

Most starts* in a single season allowing two hits or fewer in AL/NL history

Freddy Peralta (MIL): 12 in 2021**
Nolan Ryan (TEX): 11 in 1991
Nolan Ryan (HOU): 10 in 1986

    *Not counting openers.
    **Including tonight.

    — Jason Catania (@JayCat11) July 30, 2021

On the year Peralta has made 19 starts, covered 108 innings, and allowed just 47 hits.  For those doing the math, that is 5.6 IP per outing and 3.9 hits per nine innings pitched.  He currently leads the MLB with the lowest amount of hits per nine innings pitched.

Along with limiting base hits, Peralta also is striking a ton of batters out.  145 batters have been retired via the strikeout so far, which is a 12.1 strikeouts per nine innings ratio.  He currently is 9th in the MLB in strikeouts this season.

All of this re-iterates how un-hittable Peralta has been this season!  With being in the same company as Nolan Ryan, it also is time to start considering the fact that Peralta should receive Cy Young votes this year.

Some of Peralta’s biggest challengers for a Cy Young will be his own two teammates: Woodruff and Burnes.  Peralta currently has the lowest ERA of the three (2.17), but his ERA would be the lowest on 29 other team in baseball.  With the Brewers, he is third.

Freddy Peralta would have the lowest ERA on 29 other teams but he’s third-lowest on the Brewers. Absolutely insane. https://t.co/04hNUrDXgt

Needless to say it should be fun to see how the voting plays out should all three continue with their dominant seasons.  For the Brewers, this is a good problem to have for this trio has played a huge role in the teams success this season.

In general, the teams pitching has been historic all season long.  Aside from Peralta’s new MLB record, less than one week ago the team became the quickest ever to reach 1,000 team strikeouts.  The Brewers team ERA is 3.29 which is second best in all of baseball!
