For the second straight season, anyone can win the Big East. Last year featured an epic three-way tie with Cedar Grove Belgium, Hilbert, and Reedsville all sitting at 6-1. The season ended just fine for Reedsville as they were the Division 7 state champions, but the chaos in this conference continues to shine bright.
Currently, Cedar Grove Belgium is the only undefeated team in the Big East conference. CGB lost both of their non-conference games, but they turned it around by defeating Howards Grove in a shootout, smashing the division 7 state champions by 36, putting up 63 against Manitowoc Lutheran, and following it up by scoring 50 against Hilbert.
The Howards Grove victory is very important as HG is one of the three teams that sit at 3-1. Howards Grove only loss of the season comes at the hands of CGB, however, they have a big win over Oostburg. It was a defensive, low scoring battle last Friday, but Howards Grove got the job done with a 14-6 win.
Oostburg was shut out 27-0 to Southern Door in the opening week, but they followed it up with a massive 37-16 win against Kohler/Sheboygan Lutheran/Christian. Granted, KLC isn’t nearly as dominant as they once were, that’s still a huge non-conference win to have on your resume. That said, Oostburg has their work cut out for them.
Finally, the reigning Division 7 state champions. Reedsville also holds a 3-1 conference record, but they are in the same situation as Oostburg. The easy part of the schedule is out of the way. However, it’s time to really see who’s coming out on top in this conference.
Friday, September 30th
It all begins this Friday with the top four teams battling it out against one another.
Oostburg gets to host Cedar Grove Belgium in a game that will decide who sits atop the conference standings. If Oostburg comes out on the losing end, that nearly guarantees they’ll be out of the running for a Big East title.
The other big game takes place at an elementary school. Reedsville plays host to Howards Grove, a battle of two teams who lost to undefeated Cedar Grove Belgium.
After this week, three teams could be 4-1. The standings could see three 4-1 teams with a team falling to 3-2, or it could get even crazier. CGB could improve to 5-0 with either Howards Grove or Reedsville sitting right behind at 4-1. This could result in two teams falling to 3-2. This is a massive week for the Big East standings.
Friday, October 7th
Looking ahead, October 7th is a rebuilding week. Reedsville plays Hilbert, Oostburg plays Manitowoc Lutheran, Howards Grove plays Ozaukee, and CGB plays Random Lake. There’s a high probability of all of these games being blowouts. This would set the stage for the final week of the regular season.
Friday, October 14h
While we can’t give a perfect picture of these games just yet, it’s important to look ahead. Oostburg and Reedsville will be playing one another in a few weeks. Oostburg would have to defeat Cedar Grove Belgium and Lutheran while Reedsville would have to make it past Howards Grove and Hilbert.
Again, this is all speculation, but there’s a chance Cedar Grove Belgium, Reedsville, and Oostburg all enter the final week of the regular season at 5-1.
